Poetry by Kevon St. Junious
-time travel poem
I use to just want to have fun and be worry free but found out it’s easier said than done. I use to be afraid of death and even thinking about it, but I realize it's part of life and no one can escape it. Until last year, I use to believe I was indestructible on the football field against others, but i end up injuring myself; by being naive. |
1 sentence poems
I would always remember her smile like I was just With her yesterday: but I was just so blinded by her Beauty that I did not focus on her as a complete person. Soon I found out she wasn’t who she portrayed herself to be, In the end, found out she was in a very dark place. |
For success in school
You will need an acre full of dedication, truckload of motivation, pocketful of determination, portion of willingness, and a smile on your face. To make this dish you will have to stay motivated all your duration in school, you will need keep determination everyday. To maintain success, you should always show willingness to school work, and always smile through hardships you will face during your time in school. |
Mystery Girl
She walked on the bus scolding everyone that was in her area; she had a death stare that could probably pierce your soul. She sat uncomfortably with her legs kicked back on the seat, as if it were her property. Her uniform was really unprofessional and baggy, as if she didn’t care about her work appearance, She was deliberately being impatient to go to our set destination, and she acted as if we wouldn’t make it on time. |
Poetry by Luis Arreguin
You made
Me look
At you
When you had walked on by,
if i looked
for a second longer
my love would’ve
grown for you
right before my eyes.
But
the loved died
when it reached your eyes.
Me look
At you
When you had walked on by,
if i looked
for a second longer
my love would’ve
grown for you
right before my eyes.
But
the loved died
when it reached your eyes.

April 26th Pathway Day
Principal Morgan Gallagher sits down with State Rep. Maurice West
Poetry by Student Luis Arreguin
BIO POEM:
Louie- Outspoken, open, real, and trustworthy, Brother of Irene and Nya, Lover of the cold crisp air of winter, the big thick sweaters and the big fluffy fur coats, a mink coat on his back, a fur coat in the winter is like a life hack, Who feels excitement when the winter weather is here, Who feels fear when the warm fire disappears, when the lights in the room go dark, and who feels excitement when shopping, running, and styling, Who needs fur, fashion, and fun, Who gives love, positivity, and creativity, Who fears abandonment, driving, and darkness, Who would like to see everyone being treated equal, better fashion, and better lives for everyone. Who lives in a long brown home a corner, -- Arreguin TWO-TONE POEM: Part of me is sky blue-- trustworthy and loyal, wise and confident, beneficial to the mind and body, but deep inside there’s another part, ultramarine, meanings of depth-- faithful and sincere, shy and uncertain, stuttering with fear when speaking to someone new. Yet they’re both very odd, and they’re me. I’m me! Some days I’m cherry popping red-- Full of vibrancy and bright attitude, Like a fierce cat, that is ready to attack their prey! Other days I feel like a gloomy blue-- Tired and worn out, stressed and exhausted, Broken-down, pale, neglected, and run-down. But don’t be fooled, ‘Cause today and almost every other day I am cherry popping red! COMPARISON POEM: The healthy smell of bright red roses It expresses promise, new beginnings, and hope, Vibrant, dainty and luminous, Full of defense and physicality-- that’s you, Mom, my everything. Mama Luz, you know what? You’re like a dove, Seen as caring and devoted, And that wants nothing but peace and happiness for all. You keep the calm energy between us all, In winters season you’re the warmth and comfort we all seek! |
Reflecting:
BOOM! The gun goes. Crash my father goes. Screaming, running, crying my family goes. Fear is what fills my body as I see my mom running to grab me and my sister. Not knowing what is happening, my father was shot from across the block. SLAM, BAM, WAM my uncle kicks the garage door onto the ground. My sister and I being rushed inside the house and knowhere for my father to be found. My family rushing inside like a wild pack of hounds. Sirens start to be heard. Cops, paramedics, and firefighters rushing by our side. I look over and see my mom not leaving my dads side, as my dad was holding his left side, lying on the ground. My grandma comes to get my sister and I. As I tell my mom goodbye, I see tears coming out of her eyes. As a six year old, you’re not aware about who was the bad guy, but all that I knew was that there were angel’s by my dads side. QUALITY POEM: I sat on a hammock that was swinging from a shading tree. Having my restless body crashed in the swing made of rope. Right beside me I saw a squirrel running up along side of the tree the speed and strength the squirrel has to climb the tree. As the cool wind blew the hammock, making a swinging motion, the free breeze of air has me more relaxed knowing I am in great care of her power causing me to embrace the freedom. |

Poetry by Student Reality Walker
I tried to get over it before they noticed:
I thought it would be easy One last teardrop Which I use to cry all the time. But the days changed; I changed. Depression gone; Now I’m living happy. |
The type of people I dislike the most are
Mean, outrages, Loud, and annoying. The type of people I do like are, Outgoing, smart, Uplifting, and, nice. |
Roosevelt song
I hear the kids kids talking with laughter in the morning; They are tired and ready to get their day started They are determined in the work they do; They can’t stand when some tell them they Cant They are smart young and have talent; They are seniors who are ready for life. They are seniors who are determined to graduate; They are singing as they walk the stage. This is Roosevelt High School. |

Congratulations Golden Apple Award Winner Amanda McCallister!!!
Congratulations to Amanda McCallister on winning the Golden Apple Award!
Amanda was recently featured on WREX. Students had this to say: Student Tegan Farrah said she voted for McCallister to win the award because if anyone deserves it, it’s McCallister. She said the class was extremely excited as the presenters came in with the award, but she’s not surprised that her teacher won. “We were more excited that she knew how much we appreciated her, more than we were about her getting the award. Like yes the award is a symbol and a remembrance of her accomplishing this, but it’s more of all of her student and family and friends showing her the love and saying ‘we can’t say thank you enough,” Farrah said. She said one of McCallister’s most helpful characteristics is her patience. “Coming from someone who isn’t good at math, she is very patient with me,” Farrah said. “I always call her over about 7 times on the same question and she doesn’t get frustrated with me.” Other students said McCallister is a great teacher in the classroom, but she is also great at helping in other aspects of life. “Not only does she care about you and wanting to push you but she’s also helped me with a lot of personal things as well,” student Amaya Jones said. Jones said McCallister has helped her learn to budget money and even look for colleges to attend after graduation. You can read the full article here. |

Roosevelt Students Featured on WIFR!
For the March Pathway Day, Roosevelt students completed a mural on the side of local hardware store Tri-B Hardware & Supply. Student Axel Baca was interviewed about the project, and you can see his full interview and read the story at the WIFR website here!
Axel had this to say, "We weren't expecting to get it done in a day, but due to hard work we got it done pretty fast. I think the military background really captures the idea of the hardware store. People drive down Charles Street and they see this. They're going to remember this store as the store owned by military people back in the day." |

A big thanks to WREX (Channel 13) news for giving the Graphic Design & Digital Media Pathway a tour of their station. Students were given an extensive tour of the "behind the scenes" production areas, the studio, and saw the newsroom and met some of the reporters who put the news together for the website and broadcasts.
Poems by Student Raymond Erickson
I sing of December
The coldest month for me
The bitter cold attacks my bones,
And stings my skin like bees.
No more birds fly overhead,
And lots of people stay in bed,
This is why December sucks,
It makes the world seem dead.
Better than a friend, Even better than a cake,
That would be my mother, and the time for me she makes
The moments that I spend with her,
Bring joy like juicy steaks,
And every time I see her,
It feels like Christmas day.
The coldest month for me
The bitter cold attacks my bones,
And stings my skin like bees.
No more birds fly overhead,
And lots of people stay in bed,
This is why December sucks,
It makes the world seem dead.
Better than a friend, Even better than a cake,
That would be my mother, and the time for me she makes
The moments that I spend with her,
Bring joy like juicy steaks,
And every time I see her,
It feels like Christmas day.

“Giving Tuesday” at Roosevelt!
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara was among a group of donors who gave $5,000 to Roosevelt Community Education Center.
Students told McNamara about how having a commercial plastic shredder, a plastic extruder mold injector, and an oven for molds would help clean up Rockford’s plastic garbage and recycle it. But the students also said the equipment was too expensive.
Now thanks to several donors, the school can purchase the equipment for its plastics initiative.
“It makes learning cool. It makes learning fun,” says Principal Morgan Gallagher. “This is a project-based as it gets in terms of learning. This is not a teacher lecturing in front of the class for half the class period and then students working independently.”

Blood Drive Results
From Ms. Ariel Anderson:
"The results are in….
We had 82 people attend the blood drive. 52 had never donated before!
44 pints of blood were collected, so we saved 132 lives!!
We beat last year’s numbers of 65 donors with 38 pints donated.
Thank you to everyone how helped, donated, let kids out of class so they could donate, gave up their space (sorry PE teachers), or just said good things about the blood drive, every bit helps!"

Visit from U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos
United States Representative Cheri Bustos serves 7,000 square miles and nearly 700,000 constituents in Illinois's 17th Congressional District, but she stopped by Roosevelt today to see all of the great work our students are doing. She took a tour of the school with Principal Morgan Gallagher, then hosted a Question-and-Answer session in the library with students.
WIFR reporters quoted Bustos as saying, "I am walking away from this thinking this is the kind of school we should have all over the state of Illinois. It’s not just the matter of giving kids a second chance, it’s a matter of making sure that kids can leave high school and be ready to go out in the world.” -Photos credit to Nealandra Jackson |

9/14/18 - Roosevelt In The News
Roosevelt was featured in the news on WREX today as nominations begin for the Golden Apple Award. You can read the story below, or visit the original page here.
“The Golden Apple awards are pretty awesome because it’s a chance for people to thank teachers for the work that we do,” said Sue Brock, a teacher at Roosevelt Community Education Center. ... The principal at Roosevelt says there really aren’t enough opportunities to recognize teachers. “Doing a teacher appreciation week or day once a year is just not enough. And I would say, too, for our teachers, obviously I love the quality of education they provide the students and all the learning opportunities, but when you’re a teacher especially at a building like Roosevelt, you do so much more than just teach the kids,” Principal Morgan Gallagher said. Gallagher says his teachers have created a family-like atmosphere with students, which is what makes them so worthy of recognition. If you want to nominate a teacher for a Golden Apple award, you have until Oct. 15. If you would like to nominate a teacher for the Golden Apple Award visit this website. |
