On Friday, September 29th, Roosevelt held the first of several monthly Pathway Days. Students in the Manufacturing Pathway made "Spaghetti Towers" from plain uncooked spaghetti and Dots candy. The goal was to have the tallest free-standing tower. The winners, Jalen Swanborg and Tyrese Burks, built their tower to a height of 4' 10". Second place went to Tonita Barfield,Marcos Mauries and Cristian Martinez whose tower was 4' 2". All five students will receive lunch from Beef-A-Roo courtesy of Mr. Gallagher!!! Salvador Zamora and Elias Palacios-Vasquez were recipients of the 2017 PEACE BUILDER YOUTH AWARD for their work creating and implementing a youth mentoring program at Roosevelt Community Education Center.
At Roosevelt the whole school gathered to witness the sight of a solar eclipse on the first day of the 2017-2018 school year. Science teacher Sarah Schaefer started the new year with a unique science experience and provided staff and students alike with 500 NASA-certified glasses which were donated to safely witness the eclipse, the first in the United States in 38 years. "There's nothing better than getting students excited about the learning process and being able to take part in it and be active with it," said Schaefer. "So this was the perfect opportunity for the first day of school." Local news station WREX visited Roosevelt to document the experience, and their coverage can be seen here.
